Invitation: Exploring Images of the Future (1-Hour Session) via Zoom 12:15-13:15 EST

Location: Zoom

For our Zoom April session, we will explore how we as individuals, and our organizations imagine the future—and how those images shape decisions, strategy, and culture.

Session Overview
Our work often begins with imagination. The images we hold about the future—whether drawn from films, media, personal experience, or collective narratives influence what we believe is possible, desirable, or inevitable. These mental models quietly guide innovation, risk-taking, and long-term planning.

We all know this, and I am sure many of us have a few that we like to reference.

In this session, we will examine where these images of the future come from, and the evolution for ourselves.

There is homework!

Preparation – 3-4 images
Please bring

->2 examples of an “image of the future” that resonates with you personally: one from your younger years and one from today
->1 example of an “image of the future” that your company or organization implicitly or explicitly references and/or an image of the future that you use in your facilitations

Do your best of what you can bring. We will protect identities where required.
This could be:

  • A scene from a movie or series
  • A photograph or piece of art
  • A product concept or advertisement
  • A story, headline, or cultural reference

The goal is not to analyze the artifact itself, but to reflect on the assumptions and narratives it carries about the future.

We will 2-3 minutes to discuss each image. At the end of the session we will create a reference book that each of us can use in future.

Given how diverse this group is, I hope we have representation across the world.

If this is newer to you:

Why This Matters
Organizations often act on implicit visions of the future without questioning their origins. By making these images explicit, we can:

  • Surface hidden assumptions
  • Challenge dominant or limiting narratives
  • Broaden the range of possible futures we consider
  • Align more intentionally around shared visions

Outcome
By the end of the session, we will co-create a draft “Workbook of Images of the Future”—a curated set of examples and reflections that can be used to:

  • Facilitate future-oriented discussions
  • Support strategy and innovation workshops
  • Encourage ongoing reflection within teams

This workbook will serve as a practical tool for continuing the conversation beyond the session.
